Many people enjoy traveling and the reasons they travel can be as varied as the individuals themselves; however, during the holidays, travel increases dramatically as people make important decisions on whether to book a special getaway or travel home to spend time with family and old friends. With people spreading out across the country, it is not unusual to find yourself in a completely different city or state than the rest of your family. Fortunately, the holidays offer an excellent time to head home and enjoy some time with your loved ones.
The important thing to remember when planning your trip is that you need to book early, especially if you are planning to fly during peak travel periods, such as major holidays. Additionally, you will want to be sure that you have the necessary items to make the trip as comfortable as possible. If you are traveling with young children, especially if you will be in a car or plane for many hours, it is important that you make some type of arrangements to keep them entertained. Young children can get bored easily and will need a variety of activities to help them fight the boredom of being restricted to their seat for an extended period of time.
Some important factors to consider when traveling by air is how you will handle your child’s needs. When you have your arms filled with luggage, carryon pieces, jackets and other essentials, you might find it hard to carry your young child or baby. Fortunately, most airlines will allow you to gate check a stroller, but be sure you call ahead and make arrangements. When you gate check a stroller, you will be able to push the stroller right up to the plane’s door and it will be waiting for you in the same place as soon as you deplane. This can be one of the most convenient things parents can do when traveling with their children.
In addition to checking your stroller right at the plane’s door, you might also want to think about how you will handle essentials such as a car seat. Young children are often allowed to ride on an adult’s lap, but there are age restrictions and this is certainly not the most comfortable or desirable arrangement. If you plan on purchasing a seat for your child, you need to decide if you will bring a car seat onboard. Keep in mind that you will not be allowed to use any child car seat that is not clearly labeled as FAA approved. However, if you need a car seat at your destination, you can check it with your other luggage.
Planning your trip well in advance will certainly help to ensure that you do not run into any unexpected problems. Make the necessary arrangements for your child and be sure that you have everything you need to keep them entertained during the trip. Additionally, be sure to include some water and a snack in your carryon, this can help alleviate hunger and crankiness if you are delayed on the runway.
